What the FTC says
Some companies add extra charges that are hard to see or buried in the fine print. The FTC brought a case against the travel app company Hopper. It alleged that Hopper pre-selected a "Tip" and "VIP Support" and added them to the total. According to the FTC's complaint, you could only see them if you scrolled down past the "Swipe to Book Flight" button.
Before you pay: Pause. Check. Choose.
- Pause. Stop before you tap "Book," "Pay," or "Confirm."
- Check. The FTC suggests three quick looks:
- Scroll past the button to the very bottom of the screen.
- Look at every checkbox and switch. Uncheck anything you didn't choose.
- Compare the final total to the price you saw first.
- Choose. If the total still doesn't match, find out why before you pay. Or walk away.
