Rest your mouse, check the house.
On a computer: rest your mouse pointer on a link. Don't click. Look at the bottom-left corner of the window, or the small pop-up, to see the real web address.
On an iPhone, iPad, or many Android phones: touch and hold a link instead of tapping it. A preview shows where it goes. Tap outside the preview to close it without opening the link.
The words can say one thing, while the link goes somewhere else. "Log in to your account" can lead anywhere.
Read the address: find the ending (.com, .net, .org) just before the first single slash "/". The name right before that ending is the real site. Example (made up): yourbank.com.account-check.net/login goes to account-check.net, not yourbank.com.
Short links (like bit.ly) hide where they go. Skip the link, and go to the company's site by typing the address you know or using a trusted bookmark.
A helpful check, not a guarantee. If something feels off, don't click. Go to the site yourself, or call a number you already trust.
